Australian Bass (Macquaria novemaculeata)

About

Australian bass are one of the favourite east coast sportfish, known for smashing lures in tight cover and punching well above their weight. They live in fresh and estuary systems and give you proper dirty-fighting action on light gear.

Habitat

You’ll find them along eastern Australia from south-east Queensland down through New South Wales and into eastern Victoria. They hold in coastal rivers, creeks, impoundments and the brackish lower reaches of estuaries, usually around timber, rock bars, undercut banks and shaded structure.

Feeding Habits

Bass are opportunistic feeders and eat baitfish, prawns, shrimp, insects and whatever else gets swept past. They ambush from cover more than they chase long distances, so a well-placed cast tight to structure usually gets better results than blind casting open water.

Conditions & FishForecast Factors

Tide matters most in brackish rivers, with the run-in and run-out both firing when bait is moving, while the slack periods are often quieter. Low light is prime, especially dawn, dusk and overcast weather, because bass push out from cover and feed with more confidence. Light to moderate wind can help by breaking up the surface and making fish less wary, but strong wind makes lure control hard in skinny water and shut-down pockets. Smaller swell or calm conditions are usually better in estuary reaches and river mouths, as too much surge and dirty water can make bass harder to locate and less willing to sit in their usual feeding spots.

Gear & Bait

A 2–4 kg spin outfit or light baitcaster is ideal, with small hardbodies, spinnerbaits, surface walkers and soft plastics all doing the job. Fish tight to snags, laydowns and rock edges, and use leader heavy enough to turn a fish before it buries you in timber. In bait situations, live shrimp, worms and small baitfish are reliable options in slower pockets and deeper holes.

Did You Know?

Australian bass can live in both fresh and saltwater, which is why you’ll find them right up in mountain streams and also down in tidal estuary systems.
