Frigate Mackerel (Auxis thazard)

About

Frigate mackerel are a small, fast tuna-like pelagic that turn up in packs and can really fire up a session when they’re on. Aussie anglers rate them because they hit hard, pull well on light gear, and are great fun when schools push bait to the top.

Habitat

In Australian waters they’re mostly found along the tropical and subtropical coast, especially off Queensland, the Top End and northern WA, with the odd run further south in warm current lines. You’ll see them around headlands, islands, inshore reefs and offshore bait grounds, usually anywhere clean blue water and baitfish stack up.

Feeding Habits

They feed mainly on tiny baitfish, whitebait, hardyheads, pilchard fry and small squid, and they hunt by charging through tight bait schools at speed. Most of the action happens mid-water to surface, and when they’re switched on you’ll often spot bust-ups, birds working and bait spraying clear of the water.

Conditions & FishForecast Factors

Tide changes usually help because they concentrate bait and get current lines moving, with the last of the run-in and first of the run-out often worth watching. Low light at dawn and dusk can be excellent, but they’ll also feed hard in bright daylight when bait is pinned on the surface. Light to moderate wind is ideal because it keeps the water fishable without wrecking surface signs, while strong wind makes schools harder to find and harder to cast to. Smaller swell is generally better, especially offshore, because you can spot birds, bust-ups and nervous bait much easier than in a big sloppy sea.

Gear & Bait

A 2–4 kg spin outfit with 10–20 lb braid and a short fluorocarbon leader is a good match, and small metal slugs, chrome slices, stickbaits and tiny skirted lures all work when they’re chasing micro bait. Keep your casts long and your retrieves quick, and if they get fussy, downsize lures or try small pilchard pieces or live bait under the working birds.

Did You Know?

Frigate mackerel are one of the few mackerel-like fish you’ll often find mixed right in with tuna schools, smashing bait far bigger fish are chasing.
