Moses Perch (Lutjanus russellii)

About

Moses perch are a tidy little snapper-family fish that punch above their weight on the plate and on light gear. They are common in northern Aussie waters, easy to recognise by the dark spot on the side, and always a welcome bycatch when you are fishing the creeks or inshore reefs.

Habitat

In Australia you will find them right across the tropical north, from WA through the Top End and along the Queensland coast. They like estuaries, mangrove edges, rock bars, creek mouths and sheltered inshore reef country, usually in fairly shallow water but also out a bit deeper around rubble and hard bottom.

Feeding Habits

Moses perch eat small fish, prawns, crabs and other little bottom-dwelling critters. They mostly work close to structure and pick off food moving with the current, with the better bite often around low light or when the water starts to move properly.

Conditions & FishForecast Factors

Tide matters a lot, with the better feeding windows usually on the run-in or run-out when bait is pushed past mangroves, rock edges and creek mouths. Low light helps, especially dawn, dusk and overcast periods, because they will move a bit wider from cover and feed with more confidence. Light to moderate wind is usually best if it keeps the water slightly stirred without making boat control or lure presentation messy. Smaller swell is ideal around inshore reef and headland country, as too much swell dirties the water and makes it harder to fish tight to the structure where they sit.

Gear & Bait

A light spin outfit or small overhead with 10 to 20 lb braid and a short fluorocarbon leader does the job nicely. Simple paternoster or running sinker rigs work well with peeled prawn, squid strips, pilchard pieces or small live baits, and soft plastics or small vibes can be deadly around snags and rock bars. Fish close to structure, but be ready to turn them early because they love diving back into cover.

Did You Know?

That dark blotch on the side is one of the easiest ways to pick a Moses perch from other small tropical snapper in northern Australia.
