Murray Cod (Maccullochella peelii)

About

Murray cod is Australia’s iconic freshwater bruiser, built like a log and hits lures with serious intent. Anglers love them because they live in classic inland country and every bite feels like it could be the fish of a lifetime.

Habitat

You’ll find Murray cod through the Murray-Darling Basin in big rivers, creeks, lakes and impoundments across south-eastern Australia. They hold around timber, undercut banks, rock bars and deep holes, especially anywhere with current breaks and solid cover nearby.

Feeding Habits

Murray cod are ambush predators that eat fish, yabbies, shrimp, frogs and the odd small waterbird or mammal if it comes too close. Most of the time they sit tight near cover, then belt prey that wanders past, with bigger fish often feeding in short aggressive windows.

Conditions & FishForecast Factors

Tide does not matter for Murray cod because they are a freshwater species, so FishCast’s tide score is basically irrelevant here. Low light is a big plus, with dawn, dusk, overcast weather and even night sessions often producing the better bites. Light to moderate wind can help by breaking up the surface and pushing food along banks, but hard wind makes boat control and accurate casting around timber a pain. Swell is not a factor inland, but rising river flow or a bit of fresh water movement can switch them on in a similar way.

Gear & Bait

Use stout baitcast or spin gear with strong leader because cod love dirty country and hit hard around snags. Big hardbodies, spinnerbaits, swimbaits and surface lures all work, and bait fishos do well with yabbies, scrubworms and local bait presented close to timber and structure.

Did You Know?

Murray cod is the largest purely freshwater fish in Australia, and the really big old fish can live for decades.
