Red Emperor (Lutjanus sebae)

About

Red Emperor are one of the real trophy reef fish in northern Australia. They hit hard, fight dirty and taste brilliant, so they’re high on the list for anyone fishing offshore reefs.

Habitat

In Australia you’ll mainly find them off WA, the NT and Queensland, especially around offshore reefs, shoals and broken bottom. They like hard structure in decent depth, often from about 20 to well over 100 metres, and bigger fish are usually wide of the coast on isolated lumps and ledges.

Feeding Habits

They eat baitfish, squid, crabs and other bottom-dwelling stuff, and they’re proper opportunistic reef hunters. Most of the time they sit close to structure and move out to nail an easy meal, especially when current is pushing food across the reef.

Conditions & FishForecast Factors

Tide matters because a steady run usually gets them moving and feeding, while slack water often goes quiet. Low light around dawn, dusk and overcast periods can help, especially on shallower reef edges. Light to moderate wind is ideal because you can hold position and fish effectively, but too much breeze makes it hard to stay on the mark. Moderate swell can be okay offshore, but once it gets lumpy your drift, bait presentation and bottom contact all suffer.

Gear & Bait

Use solid reef gear — 50 to 80 lb braid, a tough leader and strong circle or J hooks on paternoster or running sinker rigs. Fresh flesh baits, squid, whole pilchards and live baits all work, and soft plastics or slow-pitch jigs can be deadly when they’re switched on. Keep your drag firm and turn their head early, because they’ll try to brick you straight away.

Did You Know?

Big Red Emperor often show that distinctive red-and-white barred pattern more strongly when they come up from deeper water.
