Striped Marlin (Kajikia audax)

About

Striped marlin are one of the great bluewater sportfish in Australian waters. They are fast, acrobatic and never do things by halves, which is why game anglers rate them so highly. When a stripey lights up behind the spread, it gets the heart going straight away.

Habitat

In Australia they turn up wide off the east coast, especially along the continental shelf from southern Queensland down through New South Wales and into northern Victoria, with some fish also showing off South Australia and WA offshore grounds. They like clean blue water around current lines, bait schools, seamounts and shelf edges, usually in deep water from roughly 100 metres out to the wider grounds. You will often find them where warm ocean currents push bait together.

Feeding Habits

Striped marlin mainly hunt slimy mackerel, sauries, tuna, squid and other midwater baitfish. They are visual predators and often slash through bait balls at speed, then circle back for easy pickings. Some days they are aggressive on the surface, other days they hang deeper and follow a lure or bait for a while before committing.

Conditions & FishForecast Factors

Tide matters most where current lines, bait and temperature breaks sharpen up, and bite windows often improve around tide changes when the water movement sets things up neatly. Low light at first light, late arvo and even overcast periods can be excellent, especially when fish are up and feeding on the surface. Light to moderate wind is usually ideal because it gives you enough ripple and current definition without making the spread messy, while strong wind makes lure presentation and boat control harder. Moderate swell can be fine offshore, but big sloppy swell tends to spread bait, tire crews out and make it tougher to keep lures or live baits working properly.

Gear & Bait

Most Aussie crews troll skirted lures or switch baits on 15 to 24 kilo game tackle, with 24 kilo a handy all-round choice for stripeys. Live slimies, slim tuna and bridled baits are deadly when fish are fussy, and a teaser spread can help raise them into range. Keep leadering neat, drags smooth and hooks sharp because these fish jump hard and change direction fast.

Did You Know?

Striped marlin can change colour dramatically when fired up, with electric blue stripes glowing down the sides as they charge in on a bait or lure.
