Tuskfish (Chaerodon)

About

Tuskfish are hard-fighting reef fish with serious pulling power and bright colours that make them stand out in the esky and in the water. Aussie anglers rate them because they eat well, hit baits cleanly and love country that makes every hookup feel like a scrap.

Habitat

In Australian waters you’ll mostly find tuskfish around coral and rubble reefs from the tropics down into warmer subtropical ground, especially off Queensland and the northern coast. They like broken bottom, bommies, gravel patches and reef edges in shallow to mid-depth water, often not far from good structure.

Feeding Habits

They feed mainly on crabs, prawns, small shellfish and other hard-shelled bottom food, using strong teeth to crunch it up. Most of their feeding happens close to the bottom, and they’ll nose around reefy patches looking for an easy feed rather than charging around in open water.

Conditions & FishForecast Factors

Tide matters a lot, with the better bites usually coming on the run when water is moving enough to fire up the reef but not so hard that your bait drags badly. Low light around early morning, late afternoon and overcast periods often helps them feed more confidently, especially in shallower reef country. Light to moderate wind is usually best because it lets you hold bottom and fish accurately, while strong wind makes it harder to stay on the good patches. Smaller swell or a gentle roll is generally better for reef tuskies, because big swell can dirty shallow reef edges and make boat control a pain.

Gear & Bait

A short, sturdy reef outfit with abrasion-resistant leader is the go, because they dive straight back into structure after the hit. Running sinker or simple paternoster rigs work well with fresh crab, prawn, squid or cut baits, and soft plastics or small vibes hopped tight to the bottom can also get eaten. Keep your drag firm and turn their head early.

Did You Know?

Some tuskfish are known for flipping over rocks or bits of rubble to get at crabs and other tucked-away food.
