Yellowtail Kingfish (Seriola lalandi)

About

Yellowtail kingfish are hard-fighting pelagics that give Aussie anglers a proper workout. They hit hard, run fast and pull dirty around structure, which is exactly why so many fishos are obsessed with them.

Habitat

In Australia, kings turn up along the southern half of the country, especially around NSW, Victoria, Tasmania, South Australia and WA. You’ll find them around rocky headlands, offshore reefs, bommies, islands, bait schools and deep harbour structure, from inshore washes out to the shelf edge. Bigger fish often hold around pinnacles, drop-offs and pressure points with good current flow.

Feeding Habits

Kingfish mainly feed on live baitfish like yellowtail, slimies, squid and garfish, and they won’t say no to a well-worked lure. They’re aggressive hunters that patrol current lines and bait schools, often smashing prey near the surface or pinning it against reef and structure. When they’re switched on, they can feed in short, brutal windows.

Conditions & FishForecast Factors

Tide matters a lot, with the better bites usually around the run-in or run-out when current is pushing bait past reefs, points and markers. Low light can really help, especially early morning and late afternoon, though kings will still eat through the day if bait is thick and the water is clean. Light to moderate wind is usually best because it gives you fishable drift and boat control without making live-baiting or lure work a mess. Moderate swell can fire up washes and headlands, but too much swell often dirties the water and makes holding on productive ground much harder.

Gear & Bait

Use proper tackle because kings expose weak gear fast — a PE3 to PE6 spin outfit or a solid overhead setup is a good starting point around Australian reefs and harbour structure. Live baits, knife jigs, stickbaits and soft plastics all work, with strong hooks, heavy leader and smooth drag being the big must-haves. If you’re fishing tight country, keep the hurt on early or they’ll brick you in seconds.

Did You Know?

Yellowtail kingfish are famous for following hooked mates to the boat, which is why a hooked fish can suddenly turn a quiet session into chaos.
